The Wild Steelhead Coalition (WSC) is a Northwest non-profit committed to returning wild steelhead–Washington’s State Fish–to our region’s waters. The WSC asked us to create their first organizational fundraising brochure, informed by the brand identity that we had previously completed for them. We (literally) flipped the traditional vertical layout of a typical tri-fold brochure and designed instead a horizontal orientation to mimic the shape of the fish. We chose strong, vibrant colors to help the brochure stand out from the crowd, as well as a very evocative image to send a vivid and emotional impression to steelhead anglers and other stakeholders.

Long Live the Kings (LLTK) is a Northwest non-profit committed to restoring wild salmon and supporting sustainable fishing. In 2014, LLTK asked us to create for them a high-level, general messaging trifold brochure that would have usage in a wide variety of contexts– for donors, partners, and Board members; at events, conferences, and speaking appearances; to be distributed at marinas and fishing derbies; and as an insert in packets mailed to prospective granting organizations. We crafted language that is direct and to-the-point, while also creating a sense of importance and urgency around the need to restore our region’s iconic wild salmon populations.

The appeal–a self-mailer–utilizes the project’s unique brand elements, informative metrics, and imperative language to encourage recipients to donate. FIRE 20/20 is a Bremerton-based non-profit that works to promote and build a fire and emergency service that represents the multicultural communities it serves. FIRE 20/20’s founder and former Executive Director was seeking a design solution that would allow him to easily and quickly convey what his organization is all about when he attends conferences, teaches workshops, and participates in events. We conceived of a way for him to quite literally put his message into the hands of his core target audiences. We developed a business-card sized pocket brochure which serves to communicate the FIRE 20/20 mission and work, while also serving as a valuable networking tool. The pocket brochure replaced his traditional business card and became an immediate and compelling talking point whenever he handed it to a new contact.

The Wild Steelhead Coalition (WSC) is a Northwest non-profit that seeks to increase returns of wild steelhead, Washington’s State Fish. We have produced many print materials for the WSC. We also created their brand identity and designed and built their website. For this project, we took an academic paper written by a biologist and WSC Board member and translated it into a format that would be easier for a lay person to take in and understand. We used strong graphic elements, enhanced metrics, and stunning local photography to complemented the rich science communicated in the text, and to help convey a sense of emotion and importance.

Long Live the Kings (LLTK) is a Northwest non-profit committed to restoring wild salmon and supporting sustainable fishing. Each year, LLTK holds several watershed-level fundraising events, including a summer picnic in Hood Canal. We had some fun with this invitation, playing off of the retro appeal of Hood Canal’s crab shacks and boat houses, and helping to establish a feeling of fun and whimsy about the event before the attendees even arrived.

Good Food: Sustainable Food and Farming in the Pacific Northwest

CLIENT: Moving Images Video Project    CATEGORY: Print Design     ORG TYPE: Nonprofit

GOOD FOOD is a documentary film that highlights local, organic farmers and ranchers in the Pacific Northwest region. The film premiered at the Seattle International Film Festival and afterwards we were asked to help promote it to PBS stations across the nation. We developed a national outreach strategy aimed at compelling station managers at PBS affiliates to air the film in their cities. We designed a comprehensive press kit, which included a pocket folder, inserts, a printed DVD, a postcard, and other materials, to be mailed to the stations. We also strategized and implemented a robust social media approach, targeted at local citizen advocates–deemed “Good Foodies”– who called and emailed their local PBS stations to express their desire that Good Food be scheduled in their areas. Ultimately, the film was shown on hundreds of stations across the US, and many viewing parties were held in the homes of Good Foodies.

Salmon Homecoming Save-the-Date

CLIENT: Long Live the Kings    CATEGORY: Print Design      ORG TYPE: Nonprofit

We do a lot of print design for Seattle salmon recovery nonprofit Long Live the Kings, and happily they like to have some fun with their event materials. We created this postcard to promote LLTK’s annual Salmon Homecoming Celebration on Orcas Island. It’s an informal, whimsical event, and we wanted the save-the-date card to reflect that.
